The Dragon and the Phoenix by Axelroxsox The Dragon and the Phoenix by Axelroxsox
This is my A2 art end of year piece, done in acrylic paint on a canvas that is 125x89cm.

The concept is that in China the Phoenix and dragon are seen as the perfect couple, and I wanted to portay that simply on a canvas, so the background which I had originally planned to be stormy got changed to something calm last minute to portray the mood with more success.

I was worried the phoenix was going to end up looking like someone set fire to a seagull.

I used some random eagle referances for the Phoenix and the dragon is from my head, influenced by traditional chinese dragons (:

Thoughts apprciated? :)

The dragon and the atmosphere in the picture is very beautiful!
But the bird doesn't looks like a phoenix. It looks like an eagle.

Yeah, I prepared alot more for the dragon than I did the phoenix, but I wasn't sure on how to make the phoenix look kind of realistic to an extent without using a referance, and I think eagles are beautiful and majestic, but I agree with you!

I blame it wholey on the lack of preperation time they gave us for this, but I'm realy happy with it anyway.

Thank you for your comment!

it goes like this LET the bird of loudest lay,
On the sole Arabian tree,
Herald sad and trumpet be,
To whose sound chaste wings obey.

But thou shrieking harbinger,
Foul precurrer of the fiend,
Augur of the fever's end,
To this troop come thou not near!

From this session interdict
Every fowl of tyrant wing,
Save the eagle, feather'd king:
Keep the obsequy so strict.

Let the priest in surplice white,
That defunctive music can,
Be the death-divining swan,
Lest the requiem lack his right.

And thou treble-dated crow,
That thy sable gender makest
With the breath thou givest and takest,
'Mongst our mourners shalt thou go.

Here the anthem doth commence:
Love and constancy is dead;
Phoenix and the turtle fled
In a mutual flame from hence.

So they loved, as love in twain
Had the essence but in one;
Two distincts, division none:
Number there in love was slain.

Hearts remote, yet not asunder;
Distance, and no space was seen
'Twixt the turtle and his queen:
But in them it were a wonder.

So between them love did shine,
That the turtle saw his right
Flaming in the phoenix' sight;
Either was the other's mine.

Property was thus appalled,
That the self was not the same;
Single nature's double name
Neither two nor one was called.

Reason, in itself confounded,
Saw division grow together,
To themselves yet either neither,
Simple were so well compounded,

That it cried, How true a twain
Seemeth this concordant one!
Love hath reason, reason none,
If what parts can so remain.

Whereupon it made this threne
To the phoenix and the dove,
Co-supremes and stars of love,
As chorus to their tragic scene.

You ca definitely tell that the Phoenix is based off of eagles. It seems appropriate though considering that the eagle is one of the more majestic birds alive today and the Phoenix is THE most majestic bird in the human imagination. Love this piece.

Mm, I like eagles, and really there was no other bird that sprang to mind when I thought about what I wanted it to look like! I've grown to appreciate Phoenixs a lot more since I started this piece.

And thank you!

it's because the birds warmed their wings in the morning sun, so the egyptians thought that they were worshiping it (but then again thay also thought that babboons were connected to the sun as well)

they also thought that the sun was a boat with the sun god on it, and that every day a sunset he had to defeat a giant snake.
